PATIENT
CHARTS
It
is the usual practice, in most hospitals, for Charts
to be held in the Medical Records Department for
three years after the last patient contact.
At the end of this period the Charts
are weeded from the active files and archived for
the recommended retention period.
It is the archiving of these essential
records that usually causes the most serious problems
for Medical Records Officers and Hospital Administrators.
Included among these problems are
:-
-
Lack of suitable secondary storage space.
- Space
that is available is remote from Medical Records
Department and may be in basements, boiler rooms,
out buildings, etc.
- These
secondary storage areas have no fire or flood protection
and are frequently open to access by unauthorised
persons.
- The
amount of staff time necessary to maintain the archive
and retrieve Charts when required.
Medrex has been leading the way in
solving these problems for nearly 20 years and hospitals
using our services have eliminated all of these problems.
